I'm a professional quilter. People give me quilt tops to finish. I layer the top with backing and filler, and then quilt all 3 layers together. The quilt remains fixed and taut. I stitch by guiding the machine over it, quilting cool designs- feathers, leaves, spirals. It's like I paint with thread.
